Hey I’m a single dad so I do dishes and cook for my kids and fold their laundry… and I listen to Sheologians!

I would encourage you all to go back and listen to ND Wilson’s break out session from Reform Con. I have heard this same conversation take place on Apologia Radio, felt weird about it, then Wilson gave his talk not soon after that podcast, which hit the nail on the head of this issue for me. Yes, there is a lot of bad content but I beleive there is more good. The fact that the shallow, poorly done content is pushed to the forefront while the beautiful things are hidden away, has everything to do with the sorry state of the American Church. We should definitely be highlighting and celebrating all the beautiful and good work our brothers and sister are doing, because we really do have some shining stars on our team making great content.. Not a good idea to scoff with the Pagans over what could be considered not our best plays. Lamenting together over Fireproof will not change their heart.

I’m unsure what you’re talking about since Marcus is the reason that talk is available to watch in the first place…

I have been supporting Apologia for a long time now and am very grateful for all of Marcus’ hard and good work! That is irrelevant to my point as he was not responsible for the words coming out of Wilson’s mouth. I am simply encouraging those who are thinking deeply on the subject to check it out if they have not or to revisit it for edification.

My dream is also to have a “Beauty and the Beast”- like library, with the rolling ladders!

Thank you so much for addressing this issue. I thought I was the only one who couldn’t stand crappily done “Christian art.” (And who is criticized for saying it!) I also remember when the movie, “The War Room” came out. I didn’t see it or know much about it. A friend said she’d seen it and loved it, and so I asked her what exactly it was about. She just kept saying, “prayer.” I kept asking about the plot and whether it was well done in general. I’m telling you, it was like she felt personally insulted. It didn’t seem to matter what the story was or what the quality of the acting/storytelling was. All that mattered to her and that made it a good movie in her view was that it was about prayer. I could not seem to get through to her. The more I asked, the more offended she became. It was like I was doing something wrong by asking about the quality of the movie.

For a different example/art, I used to sing with the worship team at my first church. I loved it! We had some talented people. Lack of ability was not an issue. Nor was lack of seriousness/devotion to Christ. These were committed Christian people who sincerely wanted to worship Jesus and do a good job with the music on Sundays. But no one seemed to really want to be at the practices. They were always cut short because everyone was so busy, mainly with other ministry/church activities. We’d learn a brand new song and after a couple of times through it, that was it. I would be dying to get it just right, but everything was always, “It’s good enough.”

It seems to me that artsy things are not a priority in the Church because followers of Christ don’t realize how important art is, in and of itself. Nor do they seem to realize how important it is to create our art in an excellent manner. I’ve never understood this. Some of my favorite portions of the OT are the building of the temple and all of the things that it contained. Over and over it is said that God chose skilled artists who were excellent in their work. I love those portions!

I’ve always wondered if there’s some fear of idolatry among Christians when it comes to our art. I wonder if we are afraid we love our art too much, more than we love Christ. (But we’d never say that.) Maybe that’s why we don’t want to spend too much time on it? I can’t count the times both at my old church and at my new church that I’d practically BEG the music team to get together informally, just to enjoy the beauty of music! No one even seems interested.

I can’t understand these attitudes. I love all the arts. Film/TV, books, music, dance, painting/drawing/calligraphy and nearly anything else you can think of, I love it all. I have some moderate singing ability. I’m convinced the arts are given to us by the Lord for His glory and our enjoyment and enrichment.

I cannot understand why Christians would not want to do the very best they can do in these areas. The most bizarre thing is that that attitude seems to be the majority.

As for not telling your Christian friends where they need improvement, or just plain fail, what ever happened to Proverbs 27:6? And nose rings, what about Genesis 24:47? Was Rebecca evil???

I think this commenter is trying to agree with you that Joy is not Satan for wearing a nose ring. The Genesis passage talks about Isaac’s wife Rebekah wearing a nose ring. And agree with you that the most loving and kind thing to do with other believers who believe they are gifted in music or some other art when they clearly are not is to be honest with them and encourage them to find where they truly are gifted. The Proverbs verse he cites says “faithful are the wounds of a friend but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.”

This episode was great. I just started making “Christian art” using old hymns for banner inspiration and it’s been interesting adding that to my older work that people are use too.

Loved this episode as I often wonder the same. First off if it has been done I apologize but I’d love an episode addressing the opposite side where there are great Christian artists with terrible theology. Am I wrong in saying there is a responsibility of someone who is using a gift God gave them, gaining a platform through it and to preach truth… They have an obligation to be in the word and stand for God with the platform he gave them (as we all do), but they can reach so many and often are reaching with a terrible and false message of who God is or what the Bible actually says or what is sin… Another rant is that we read a lot of old books in our family (yup we’re weirdo homeschoolers who love out of print books ?) anyways and the gospel message/scripture is present in the classics Heidi, The Little White Horse, A Wrinkle in Time, The Secret Garden just to name a few… however why is it just the secularists that are making these movies!? They are terrible and of course remove any reflection of God!! ? anyways rant over. Thanks for all y’all do! I’m enjoying it learning a ton and even make my high schooler (son) listen! ? he actually likes it. Ohhhhh Id love a book list. I grew up in the church but this is allll new to me! Every episode I think “hey there’s prob a great book about that.”
